A seminar titled "Dhaka City Traffic Planning and Management: Solutions to Some Fallacies" was held on November 7, 2024, organized by the Department of Civil Engineering in collaboration with the Transportation Engineering Club (TEC) at the University of Asia Pacific (UAP). The event took place in the UAP Auditorium, attended by students from Levels 3 and 4, along with faculty members from the Civil Engineering Department.
The seminar featured Prof. Dr. Md. Hadiuzzaman, a prominent figure in transportation engineering and a professor in BUET’s Department of Civil Engineering. With extensive experience in transportation infrastructure and policy, Dr. Hadiuzzaman has held influential roles, including Director of the Accident Research Institute (ARI) and Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL). His contributions to urban transportation research and his role as an expert with the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) have made him a sought-after voice on the complexities of Dhaka’s traffic and public transit challenges.
The session began with a brief introduction by the host, Lecturer Syeda Manila Jannat followed by TEC advisor Dr. Mursheda Rahman, who spoke about the club’s objectives and welcomed the chief guest. In his presentation, Prof. Dr. Hadiuzzaman dissected some common misconceptions about Dhaka’s traffic and offered practical solutions that could lead to substantial improvements. He discussed strategies to address congestion issues and foster sustainable mobility options, offering students a critical look at traffic engineering solutions tailored to urban challenges.
The seminar included an interactive Q&A session, where students engaged actively with the speaker, exploring deeper insights into traffic management. The event concluded with a closing speech by the Prof. Dr. Nehreen Majed, Head of the Civil Engineering Department, who thanked the speaker and participants. Finally, Prof. Dr. Nehreen Majed and Prof. Dr. Md. Abdur Rouf, Dean of the School of Engineering, presented Dr. Hadiuzzaman with a token of appreciation, recognizing his valuable contributions to the discussion. The seminar was well-received, equipping students with important perspectives on the role of engineering in tackling urban traffic issues.
